Our family would like to personally thank everyone in our community who has donated their time, money, blood and DNA toward helping our daughter Nora. Nora has Severe Aplastic Anemia a bone marrow disorder with no known cause (she no longer makes her own blood). The only cure is a stem cell bone marrow transplant.
We would like to extend a special THANK YOU to the Mastic Beach Property Owners Association, Legislator Kate Browning’s Office, and St Jude Roman Catholic Church, all who coordinated Blood and Bone Marrow Drives in Nora’s name. With their commitment to Nora’s cure, we have swabbed over 200 possible bone marrow donors.
We would also like to thank, Angie Carpenter, Kate Browning, Mark Lesko, Dan Panico, Lou Marcoccia, Ken Olivio, the Mastic Beach Fire Department, Mastic Beach Ambulance, the “Brookhaven Cares” volunteer division of the Town of Brookhaven Highway Department, countless private citizens and businesses—all who personally donated, resources, blood and/or money to help Nora find a match.
In our search for a bone marrow donor, Long Island came together and showed us its true character by caring for one of its smallest citizens, with grace and dignity unmatched anywhere else in the world. During this very difficult time, this community has lifted up our spirits and has given us hope for Nora’s recovery. We are truly grateful to be your neighbors and friends.
We are still hopeful in searching for a bone marrow donor for Nora, as well as for the other children in our community who need to find a match—unfortunately, there are quite a few. Please, if you are eligible to donate, go to http://www.marrow.org for more information about becoming a bone marrow donor. The next blood and marrow drive will be on October 7th at St. Jude please call Outreach at 631-281-5634 for more information.
Thank you for your support, prayers and love.
Shawn, Maureen, Arik and Nora Getchell
