Serum sickness

Nora has begun getting serum sickness from the ATG. She woke up Sunday with a fever and a prickly rash on her arms. Shawn rushed her over to Sloan and they administered steroids, Benedryl, and whole blood… Again. (She is really sucking down the blood product!)

Serum Sickness is basically… She was given a drug made in a rabbit and her body wants the rabbit out… NOW. If you want to read more…

So far her joints ache, she has an itchy rash, her stomachs hurts, she has excema on her eye, ringworm on her neck, a fever that comes and goes, puffy cheeks from the steroids and all the ‘roid rage to go with it. She is now on antivirals, steroids, antibiotics, Benedryl, Tylenol, B12, hydrocortizone, antifungal, an inhaler when she coughs and something to stop her stomachs from hurting. Poor kid has certainly been through a great deal.

She has a pretty bad case of the poor-me’s and the why-me’s. My answer of, “Because you are tougher, stronger and more loved than everyone else.” is no longer cutting it. At least she still has faith that she will get better. She is, in a nutshell, feeling cheated out of her childhood. Can’t say I blame her. It’s not fair… And all of our patience is running thin but we also know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. Her future will shine brighter because of this time in her life.

“We are afflicted in every way, but not constrained; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.”
